WHAT IS REVERSE OIL PAINTING ON PLEXIGLAS?
Reverse Painting has been around since the Middle Ages. A very simplified explanation is offered here. It had a huge revival in Croatia around the 1960s. The Paradis paintings shown here are painted with this technique. This is a very small collection of Paradis’, and doesnot include the paintings Paradis painted in Croatia and the collection left in Croatia. In the Balkans, which included Croatia and other surrounding countries, it had a strong revival by the surrounding artists who were identified as Self-taught Naïve Artists.
The artist will turn the top front-side of the plexi over and will begin painting on what is the back of the plexi. All painting is done on this reverse side of the plexi surface, until every square inch is covered in paint. This work is intensely detailed and advances extremely slowly. The artist must think, visualize, and then begin to actually paint in reverse.
When the painting is deemed completed by the artist, and every inch of the back of the original surface is covered with paint. When dry, this finished top surface has an extremely beautiful sheen and remarkable clarity.
