In winter, it was not uncommon for Croatian Naïve self-taught artists to use the snow and landscapes as new themes and subjects in their work. Browsing the snow slideshow below, you can see many of the elements that were included in Paradis’ paintings when he used snow as the major subject in his snow paintings. Farmers and village peasants are working hard in the snow. Artists found the snowy landscapes too beautiful and too irresistible for overlook, and this included Branko Paradis as well. Even in Paradis’ snowy landscape paintings, there is an overflowing of details, even in the outdoor snow scenes. There are children painted in the midst of their winter fun, playing with other children, men might be chopping wood, or going with their wagons and horses for supplies. Friendly cats or dogs play in the snow with endless energy. Paradis loved to paint skies, hovering over those beneath, as they enjoyed their snow. He grew up with a myriad of these images, year after year of his life, and he has painted hundreds of snow paintings, sharing with us the memories that remained firmly in his eyes and heart.
